A new analysis has found that postpartum depression rates in the United States have doubled in the past decade. The number rose from 1 in every 10 new moms in 2010 to almost 1 in every 5 by 2021, a research team from Kaiser Permanente Southern California found. Better detection and reporting and rising rates of obesity could be two factors playing a big role. In 2021, 17% of new moms of a normal weight suffered from postpartum depression, compared to 24.2% of moms with severe obesity. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises screening for moms during well-child visits when a baby reaches 1, 4, and 6 months of age. (UPI)
