The Players Club/Mascot Label GroupDoors guitarist Robby Krieger has released “Hot Head,” the third advance track from his upcoming solo album, The Ritual Begins at Sundown.
The album will hit stores on August 14, after its original April 24 release was postponed because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
“Hot Head,” available now as a digital single and via streaming services, is one of nine original Krieger songs on the 10-track instrumental collection, which also includes a cover of the 1970 Frank Zappa tune “Chunga’s Revenge.” You can check out an accompanying a psychedelic “visualizer” video for “Hot Head” on YouTube. The colorful, kaleidoscopic clip creates a relaxing trance for those who listen to the six-minute, jazz-influenced track. The song is the third release off of the forthcoming album, joining “The Drift” and “Slide Home.”
As previously reported, Krieger’s main collaborator on The Ritual Begins at Sundown was his longtime songwriting partner Arthur Barrow, a multi-instrumentalist who contributed to many Zappa albums. Also featured on the new record are several other Zappa alums — trombone player Jock Ellis, trumpet player Sal Marquez, keyboardist Tommy Mars and drummer Chad Wackerman — as well as flutist AeB Byrne, sax players Vince Denim and Chuck Manning, and drummer Joel Taylor.
The Ritual Begins at Sundown, which can be pre-ordered now, is Krieger’s first solo album since 2010’s Grammy-nominated Singularity.
In other news, Krieger has posted the latest in a series of video guitar tutorials on The Doors’ official YouTube channel. The new clip features Robby teaching viewers how to play the flamenco-influenced 1968 Doors tune “Spanish Caravan.” Krieger previously has shared videos on how to play “People Are Strange,” “Moonlight Drive” and “Roadhouse Blues.”
