Thousands of dragonflies descended on beachgoers in Misquamicut Beach, Rhode Island on Saturday. Witnesses say the swarms came in waves, with the largest arriving at around 1 p.m. Dragonfly expert Ginger Brown said this can happen if their habitats dry up during the summer. Emerging dragonflies then leave the area in search of water. “They can travel long distances with relative ease,” Brown said. Beachgoers were caught on film swatting the insects, covering themselves with towels, and screaming. (UPI)
