Researchers from the University of Virginia found that it’s possible to be “fat but fit.” The study found that people who are overweight or obese but physically fit have the same death risk as someone at a “normal” weight. After analyzing data from 400,000 people, researchers found that being out of shape raised death risk, not weight alone. “Exercise is more than just a way to expend calories,” Associate Professor Siddhartha Angadi said. “It is excellent ‘medicine’ to optimize overall health and can largely reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause death for people of all sizes.” These findings could mean a shift in focusing on weight loss to a focus on physical fitness.
