Delaware Ranks Worst For Hospital Cleanliness In 2025 Study

Delaware leads the nation for dirtiest hospitals according to new research from healthcare platform Nursa. The study scored states using three measures: reported infections, inspection write-ups, and patient ratings. Delaware earned a 9.59 out of 10 “dirty” score, with 2,763 hospital-acquired infections in 2023, 48 flagged inspections since 2010, and a 2.29 out of 5 cleanliness rating from patients. District of Columbia ranked second at 9.41, followed by Alabama at 9.11. Utah topped the cleanest list with a 2.71 score, 6,192 infections, and 3.79 out of 5 patient rating. Nationwide, hospitals reported 794,619 infections in 2023, while 8.96% of patients said rooms weren’t consistently clean. Researchers noted 13,323 inspection reports used terms like “dirty” or “contaminated” since 2010. The study serves as a comparison tool rather than definitive hospital safety certification.
