Loverboy was formed in 1978 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, by guitarist Paul Dean, who had been in 13 previous bands. He and singer Mike Reno, who was in the group Moxy, planned to be a studio-based duo like Steely Dan until meeting the other members of Loverboy.
The group also considered Coverboy as a name.
The second single from the group's debut album, “The Kid Is Hot Tonite” reached Number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became — as bassist Scott Smith described in the liner notes ofLoverboy Classics — “the ultimate Loverboy song; uptempo, aggressive, melodic yet heavy. From the very first time we played it we knew we were on to something.”
Smith also noted, “This song has spawned so many imitations that I've given up trying to keep track.”
“The Kid Is Hot Tonite” was one of the songs on the demo tape that got Loverboy their recording contract.
The Loverboy album reached Number 13 on the Billboard 200 and has sold well over two million copies.
