Neil Young began recording his third album, After The Gold Rush, with his band Crazy Horse, but booted the group due to guitarist Danny Whitten's continuing drug abuse. Nevertheless, he included some tracks that he had worked on with the group, including “When You Dance, I Can Really Love,” which was the album's only single.
After The Gold Rush also featured the contributions of Nils Lofgren, a teenaged guitar player from the Baltimore band Grin, whom Young had befriended and brought out to the West Coast to establish his solo career.
After The Gold Rush was named after a screenplay by Dean Stockwell. Young hoped to create a conceptual piece, but it didn't work out.
After The Gold Rush reached Number Eight on the Billboard 200 and has sold more than two million copies.
The album peaked at Number Seven on the U.K. album chart.
