“Rebecca Syndrome”, or retroactive jealousy, happens when a person is jealous of their partner’s romantic past. While a little bit of jealousy is normal, sufferers may end up feeling like their partner’s ex is more attractive, smarter, or a better lover. The condition gets its name from Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 novel “Rebecca”, where a young woman is jealous of her husband’s late wife. These feelings could actually signal unresolved issues in the sufferer. “Ask yourself whether your anxiety, your intrusive thoughts about feeling less important to your partner than their former partner, may really relate to your own past,” Psychotherapist Toby Ingham said.
