A study from Quebec found that replacing two tablespoons of refined sugar with maple syrup could reduce risk factors for diabetes and heart disease. Laval University researchers asked 42 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 75 to replace 5% of their daily calories with maple syrup or refined sugar over the course of two eight-week periods. Those who used maple syrup had lower blood sugar spikes, reduced blood pressure, and slightly reduced belly fat. “We know from decades of research that maple syrup is more than just sugar. It contains over 100 natural compounds, including polyphenols, that are known to prevent disease in part through their anti-inflammatory effects,” lead scientist Dr. André Marette said. (Study Finds)
