Nicole Graham just wanted to take her daughter Paris for an afternoon ride on the beach. What she got instead was a three-hour fight to save her horse’s life.

Astro, an 18-year-old show horse, sank neck-deep into the thick mud at Avalon Beach in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. The tide was coming in. The clock was ticking.
Rescue crews showed up and threw everything they had at the problem. Fire hoses. A winch. Nothing worked. With the water rising, a vet arrived, sedated the 1,100-pound horse, and a tractor finally dragged him to solid ground with just minutes to spare.
Through all of it, Nicole never left his side. She stood waist-deep in the mud the entire time, keeping Astro calm and his head above water.
The rescue crew walked off that beach filthy and absolutely ecstatic. So did Astro.
And Paris? She watched her mom refuse to give up on their horse. That’s a pretty good lesson for a 7-year-old.
