Gas prices are now averaging $4.52 a gallon nationwide, and people are getting creative.
Meet Mali Hightower of Ellenwood, Georgia. He pulled a broken pink Power Wheels Barbie Dream Camper out of someone’s trash, stuffed a two-gallon power washer engine into it, and now he rides it to the grocery store. Knees at his ears. Dirtbike helmet on his head. Rack on top for groceries.
His ’96 Mercedes costs ninety bucks to fill. The Barbie car? Not so much.
He’s not alone. Forty-four percent of Americans say they’ve cut back on driving. Bus ridership in Bangor, Maine is up 21 percent. People are avoiding freeway gas stations, where prices near LA have hit nine dollars a gallon.
One camp director in Massachusetts is now pitching sleep-away camp as a money-saver. Her pitch: “Send your kids to overnight camp. You’ll save a fortune on gas.”
Gas prices: changing everything, including what we drive.
