Rachel Larkin was camping in Virginia with her family when they stopped at a wishing well at Luray Caverns. She handed her five-year-old daughter Palmer a coin to make a wish. Palmer had a different idea.
@rachelnicolelarkin Thought I did something with a coin and a dollar… Palmer humbled me real quick 😳😂 Well, there goes my debit card in the @luraycaverns 😬😂💳@Make-A-Wish ♬ original sound – rachelnicolelarkin
She threw her mom’s debit card into the well instead. “I wanted to give everybody all the wishes they want,” Palmer explained, with the kind of confidence only a five-year-old can pull off.
Rachel posted the moment online, expecting maybe a few laughs from friends. Instead it took off, racking up around 27 million views. Most of the response was good natured, but enough of the comments turned nasty that Rachel decided to do something about it.
She canceled the card, got a new one, and started using her sudden viral platform for good. She’s been granting small wishes for strangers ever since, a movie night for one family, a healthy meal for another.
A five-year-old’s wishing well mishap turned into a reminder that you can take any moment, even an embarrassing one, and turn it into something kind. Leave it to a kid to figure that out first.
