The new year kicked off with a little extra joy at the Nashville Zoo. Early on New Year’s Day, the zoo welcomed an adorable aardvark calf, one of the very first animal births across accredited zoos nationwide in 2026. Small enough to be compared to a rolling pin and weighing about four pounds, the tiny newcomer is already capturing hearts.
This is a special milestone for first-time parents Karanga and Winsol, both well known to zoo visitors as ambassador animals. Thanks to close, hands-on care from keepers, the zoo team was able to closely monitor the pregnancy and be present for the calf’s arrival, adding valuable insight into a species that’s rarely studied in the wild.
While the calf hasn’t been named yet, its arrival is already meaningful. In time, it may move to another accredited zoo to help strengthen the aardvark population. For now, it stands as a sweet reminder that the year began with something hopeful, rare, and undeniably cute.
