A routine lunch break in Virginia Beach became a dramatic rescue moment when a Navy aviation rescue swimmer and other Good Samaritans pulled a woman from her SUV just seconds before it fully sank in icy water off a boat ramp. The vehicle had driven into the water near Bubba’s on Shore Drive and the driver was unable to unlock the doors as the SUV filled with water. After hearing the crash, Jeremy Way, a Navy rescue swimmer, dove in and worked with others to break the glass and free the woman as the car went under. They swam her to safety using trained rescue techniques. Everyone involved exited the water safely. The driver and two rescuers were treated at a hospital for non-serious injuries. Way said being there felt like destiny given his training and the Navy motto “so others may live.”
