If you’ve been following the NBA playoffs, you may have noticed the San Antonio Spurs have a secret weapon. And they wear habits.
The Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco, a group of Catholic nuns from San Antonio’s Westside, have gone massively viral during the Spurs’ playoff run. They’ve been fans since the Tim Duncan era, getting into basketball specifically to connect with the kids in their community. But this postseason, the whole country found out about them.
Mood Boost: Meet the Spurs Nuns, San Antonio’s Favorite Good Luck Charm
It started when the sisters posted a photo cheering on the Spurs during the Western Conference Semifinals. The post got 56,000 likes almost immediately. Then the Spurs took notice and invited them courtside for Game 4 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The sisters showed up, blessed player Luke Kornet before tip-off, and the Spurs proceeded to win 103 to 82, holding OKC to their worst offensive output in over four years.
Sister Margaret Natal says what she loves most about the Spurs is how they play as a team. “You see how Coach Pop taught them to work as a team and that it’s not about the best player. I think that is so beautiful.”
They’ve been cheering since the days of Gregg Popovich visiting them after a championship. They’re not going anywhere. And honestly? The Spurs probably don’t want them to.
